Obelix is a "well covered" Gaul who fell in a cauldron of magic potion when he was a baby, giving himself superhuman powers permanently. This also means that drinking any more has some serious side effects, meaning that he is forbidden from having any, much to his displeasure. This is a running gag constantly referred to during the series, often clumisily disguising himself , trying and failing to get at the potion. As a result, he is powerful and agile but is not very intelligent, meaning Asterix often acts as the brains of the duo. Nethertheless, he is considered a senior member of the villiage. Also, he and Asterix make up the foreign detachment, which is sent on most missions.
